Profile
The gallery of Stefan Brenske specializes
in icons, primarily Russian and Greek, from the 16th to the
19th century. Additionally, the gallery focuses on classical
modern artists, who have been influenced by icons.
Company history
Stefan Brenske grew up within one of the oldest specialized
icon galleries on the European continent. His father Helmut
Brenske, Hanover, started to collect icons in the 1960’s;
he then opened his gallery in Hanover in 1976, and published
several books on icons.
When he was a child, Stefan Brenske was allowed to accompany
his father on study trips to Russia and other orthodox countries.
He later took part in all of his father’s major business
activities.
Stefan Brenske studied History of Art and Business Administration.
He graduated with a Master of Arts degree. He received his
PhD in 1988 "magna cum laude". Byzantine influenced
Romanesque wall paintings served as the subject matter of his
thesis.
After having dealt with icons throughout his entire studies,
Stefan Brenske opened his own gallery in 1995. In Munich,
Stefan Brenske organizes exhibitions and on occasion displays
his most recent acquisitions to his collectors in a specially
designed studio (by appointment only).
